DONNA, RGV – The old Rivas superstore on Business 83 in downtown Donna is being transformed into a Vera’s King-O-Meats.

Vera’s, an Edinburg-based company, prides itself on serving and selling top quality meats of premium grades and prime choice beef to customers, with a specialty of brisket prepared in house. In addition to being a full-service meat market, Vera’s also offers game processing and catering.

Asked why her company chose Donna, Vera’s King-O-Meats co-owner, Nadia Vera Moralez said: “Our move into Donna was a simple one. Being the heart of the Mid Valley, located between Weslaco and Pharr, Donna has been experiencing tremendous growth in the recent years.”

Vera Moralez said the “positive feedback” she and her team have received from the community made it a very simple decision.

“We feel that we have been welcomed with open arms and have not had any problems with the current placement. We are looking forward to serving the communities of Donna and surrounding areas, while becoming part of this close-knit family,” Vera Moralez said.

Vera’s King-O-Meats was started in Edinburg in 1970 by brothers Roman Vera, Jr., and Antonio Vera. The company celebrates its 47th anniversary this month. Roman’s daughter Nadia and Antonio’s son Marco took over the business upon the retirement of their fathers in 2002. Before that, the company expanded operations in Edinburg in 1994.

“Now, we have decided to take it to a new level by going to Donna. We do excellent, we really, really, do. We have been blessed with our customers and their loyalty. We have been here forever, people know us, people like us, we are well known,” Vera Moralez said.

In her exclusive interview with the Rio Grande Guardian, Vera Moralez admitted she and her cousin went back and forth between Donna and Weslaco as to which city to expand into.

“We settled in Donna because of the international bridge and all the new trade they are getting with Mexico. The progress they are having there, as compared to anywhere else, it is amazing. We got lucky when Mr. Rivas, of M. Rivas, was retiring. We got together with him and just made something happen,” Vera Moralez said.

Asked what the secret to their success is, Vera Moralez said: “Customers service, good quality and low prices.”

She added: “God willing, our grand opening in Donna will be Sept. 1. So, come visit us in Donna.”

In his interview with the Rio Grande Guardian, Marco Vera said he and his cousin were excited to be expanding in Donna. Asked what their customers in Donna can look forward to, Marco Vera said:

“A lot of selection, great prices, great quality and customer service.” Like his cousin, Marco Vera said their business has been blessed.

“Knowing that our business has got better over the years is great. It is a good feeling knowing we are doing something right. Our customers are asking when are we opening in Donna. It is a pretty cool feeling. We want to give the people of Donna an experience they have not had before,” Marco Vera said.

Donna’s interim City Manager, Ernest Silva said whether it is cook-offs or cook-outs, Vera’s has been one of the preferred meat suppliers by local grillers. He said Vera’s meat market offers catering for all events including weddings, quinceañeras, banquets, birthday parties, corporate events, and any other occasion.

“On behalf of our community, we are extremely excited to announce that another new business will be opening its doors in our community. We welcome Vera’s King-O-Meats with open arms and we are happy to have them join our family,” Silva said.

Lyle Garza, director of Donna’s Economic Development Corporation, said he is “especially proud” that out of all the cities in the Mid-Valley, Vera’s chose Donna as its second location, to complement its original meat market in Edinburg.

“Vera’s will be locating in downtown Donna, thus providing easy access for commuters using the City’s Park and Metro Bus System or pedestrians that frequent Donna’s Town Square. We are extremely fortunate to have historic Vera’s King-O-Meats come to Donna,” Garza said.

“This is just another example one that our community continues to grow and attract new businesses making Donna the place to do business in the Valley.”

Donna EDC President Cathy Alvarado said she was “thrilled” to welcome Vera’s into the community.

“We have been coordinating closely with the Vera Family since the beginning of the year,” Alvarado said. “Our city and EDC are working hand in hand to attract new business opportunities for our citizens.”

Alvarado said Donna residents can look forward to “more announcements in the near future from other businesses that will be making Donna their new home.”

Vera’s King-O-Meats is slated to open its Donna facility in the Fall.
