Graphology is also being used in career counseling (to uncover hidden talents, interests and abilities), jury selection, employee-theft prevention (chronic dishonesty as well as signs of fakery and stress show up in handwriting) and psychotherapy.
Some professional graphologists even claim they can detect physical ailments, such as poor circulation, heart disease and digestive disorders, in handwriting. Some 300 factors, including: the size and stroke of a person's handwriting, slant, pressure, whether the writing is straight or angles up or down, spacing, margins, and how the signature (a critical part of handwriting sampled) compares to the rest of the writing are studied. Doodling, Klein has found, is often more revealing than handwriting. "The connection to the subconscious mind is even greater than it is in handwriting. Doodles are very spontaneous.
No one tells you what to doodle. "Some people are spontaneous in their handwriting, but for many others, the handwriting becomes rigid. The superego takes over and controls the amount of expression in the handwriting." Los Angeles graphologist McNichol contends, however, that doodles are not as significant as handwriting. "Doodles are representative of what you are feeling or thinking at the time. By contrast, handwriting, which is a constant over a longer period of time, reveals innate personality traits." "Doodles are most significant when they are aberrant," she continues.
"In highly disturbed individuals, we find doodles that are monstrous, ghoulish, hideous." She cites the example of a prisoner who covered his cell walls with doodles of faces with blood dripping from the eyes and knives stuck in mattresses. Other examples are a Frankenstein face on a child or a table that limps. But before you take a second look at your own doodles and decide an appointment with a psychiatrist is in order and fast realize that there are other factors involved. "These types of doodles are intentionally hideous or distorted," McNichol explains. "They are obvious distortions.
If your table is limping, chances are it's because you cannot draw, not because you meant to draw it that way." Frequency is another factor. "When we analyze doodles, we look for patterns," McNichol says. "Doodles are most revealing when there is a pattern. For instance, hard, angular, slashing doodles indicate anger and frustration.
